Dr. Fareed Ramzi Asfour has a global approach to the practice of Infectious Diseases. He studied Genetics with a special interest in Economics and International Development at the University of California, Davis. He attended medical school at New York Medical College, followed by a residency in Internal Medicine at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco. He then completed a three year Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the University of California, San Diego. While in Fellowship, his interests were in HIV clinical trials and in global public health. He was very active in educating physicians in HIV Medicine in Ethiopia and South Africa. Upon completing his fellowship, he joined the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, and moved to South Africa where he supported the implementation of therapy to combat HIV in the Eastern Cape Province. From South Africa, he headed to Geneva to work at the World Health Organization where he was in charge of developing a program to train doctors in low resource settings in HIV medicine.
Dr. Asfour left Geneva to return to the San Francisco Bay Area to be close to his family. He joined Diablo Infectious Diseases in 2007. His current interests in addition to routine patient care are HIV medicine, International Public Health, including Infection Control, and legal consulting. In caring for patients, Dr. Asfour has a holistic approach, and is interested in helping patients who have had difficulty in diagnosing and treating their ailments.
